Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking a Senior Outpatient Coder to ensure accurate ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT coding for day surgery and observation encounters based on documentation in the electronic medical record.

In this non-exempt role, you will collaborate with the coding team, physicians, and ancillary staff, perform physician queries when needed, and uphold AHIMA guidelines and hospital policies to maintain coding quality.

Qualifications

• Three years of outpatient coding experience or successful completion of the Houston Methodist Senior Outpatient Coder Transition Program.
• Associate’s or higher degree in an AHIMA-accredited program or two additional years of experience in lieu of degree.
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT guidelines and official coding guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Assign diagnostic and procedural codes to encounters of high complexity.
• Maintain coding quality and accuracy per AHIMA standards and hospital policy.
• Collaborate with physicians and coding team; query when documentation is unclear.
