Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking an Outpatient Coder to ensure accurate assignment of ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes for outpatient, ER, therapy, and clinic encounters based on documentation in the electronic medical record.

The role emphasizes compliance with AHIMA guidelines and coding standards. A minimum of an Associate degree in a HIM program or equivalent experience is required, along with at least one year of outpatient coding exposure or completion of the Coding Apprentice Program.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or higher in an AHIMA-accredited HIM program, or additional two years of experience in lieu of degree
• One year of outpatient coding experience or completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program
• Must have one of the following certifications: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H, CPC-I, CPC-A, CCC, COC
• Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT coding and APC assignment
• Knowledge of electronic medical records and imaging systems

Responsibilities

• Interacts with coding team and stakeholders.
• Participates in coding section meetings and education sessions.
• Code or review coded accounts for accuracy and respond promptly to requests.
• Query physicians to obtain or clarify diagnoses/procedures.
• Ensure accurate coding and data abstraction per policy and guidelines.
