Job summary

Houston Methodist seeks an Outpatient Coder to assign ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes for outpatient, ER, therapy, and clinic encounters based on documentation in the EMR. The role requires knowledge of coding guidelines, compliance, and the ability to query physicians when needed.

Minimum one year of outpatient coding experience or completion of the Coding Apprentice Program, plus AHIMA/AAPC credentials such as RHIT/RHIA/CCS/CPC. On-site coding in Houston, TX is expected.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher in an AHIMA-accredited HIM program, or two additional years of experience in lieu of degree.
• One year of outpatient coding experience or completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program.
• Must hold AHIMA/AAPC coding credentials (RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CPC, etc.).
• Proficient in ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding and in EHR systems.

Responsibilities

• Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes for outpatient, ER, therapy, and clinic encounters.
• Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with regulatory guidelines.
• Query physicians when diagnoses or procedures are unclear to improve data quality.
• Maintain productivity and meet departmental coding timeframes.
