Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a lead Mechanical Engineer to drive design efforts on a nuclear-focused project team in Augusta. The role combines hands-on mechanical design with oversight of staff and project budgets, offering growth into senior engineering leadership.

Responsibilities include preparing complex calculations, drafting inputs, engaging with vendors, and coordinating with customers. A U.S. citizen with 12+ years of experience and strong communication is required.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain US government security clearance
• ABET-accredited BSME/MSME with strong thermodynamics/heat transfer/ fluid mechanics/ machine design
• 12+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, preferably in a nuclear environment
• Experience designing/analysing piping, pressure vessels, HVAC, or radioactive material handling systems
• Working knowledge of ASME B31 piping codes, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, ASME AG-1
• Experience with finite element analysis or advanced engineering software (e.g., ANSYS, AutoPIPE)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design on a multi-disciplined project team
• Mentor junior engineers and monitor staff work within schedule and budget
• Prepare and review complex calculations and mechanical system designs
• Produce design inputs for drawings (P&IDs, layouts, general arrangements) and equipment specifications
• Communicate specifications to vendors and prepare reports/studies
• Develop budgets, schedules, and work plans; ensure on-time delivery
• Interface with customers in project meetings and provide high-quality outcomes
