Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Augusta, GA is seeking a lead Mechanical Engineer to drive design on nuclear-focused projects. The role combines home and office work in a hybrid arrangement and offers opportunities for career advancement.

You will lead the mechanical design and analysis of complex equipment, coordinate with multi-discipline teams, mentor junior engineers, and interface with customers while ensuring compliance with ASME and regulatory codes.

Qualifications

• Must be a US citizen and eligible for a government security clearance.
• BSME/MSME from ABET-accredited program with strong focus in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, or thermal systems.
• 10+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, ideally in a nuclear environment.
• Experience with piping, pressure vessels, HVAC, and/or radioactive material handling systems.
• Working knowledge of codes and standards (ASME B31, Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, AG-1).
• Experience with FEA or advanced software (e.g., ANSYS, AutoPIPE, Datacor/AFT Flow, Trace 700).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design engineering efforts on a multi-disciplined project design team for special purpose equipment, pressure vessels, and interfacing systems.
• Prepare and review complex calculations.
• Prepare and review mechanical systems/equipment designs.
• Prepare design input for drawings (P&IDs, machine layouts, GA).
• Prepare and review equipment specifications.
• Communicate with vendors via precise specifications.
• Prepare and review reports/studies.
• Develop project budgets, schedules, and work plans; monitor progress.
• Interface with customers in meetings.
• Mentor junior engineers.
