Job summary

First National Bank of Omaha is seeking a Senior Mainframe Engineer to lead and optimize z/OS upgrade programs within our managed services engineering team. The role focuses on developing standards, improving processes, and delivering reliable mainframe services across customer environments.

The ideal candidate brings deep z/OS expertise, a track record of architecting scalable solutions, and the ability to drive modernization initiatives while mentoring engineers.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in z/OS operating system upgrades, mass maintenance deployment, and software installation.
• In-depth knowledge of z/OS components: JES2, HCD/IODF, SMP/E, WLM, OMVS/USS, SMF/RMF, ASM, GRS, SDSF, TSO and RACF.
• Strong understanding of communication protocols (VTAM, TCP/IP) and LPAR configuration via HMC.
• Expertise in storage management (SMS, HSM, DFDSS, VSAM, IDCAMS, ICF Catalogs).
• Minimum 10 years of experience as a Mainframe Senior Systems Engineer.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a technical leader, guiding best practices and mentoring team members on z/OS operating system upgrade optimization.
• Design and implement standardized approaches for z/OS upgrades and mass maintenance to ensure repeatable, high-quality outcomes.
• Lead efforts to optimize system performance, streamline processes, and reduce operational complexity.
• Oversee installation, configuration, and maintenance of IBM and ISV software products, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute operating system upgrades with minimal business impact.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation and templates for operating system rollouts.
• Drive adoption of new technologies and capabilities (e.g., Sysplex enhancements, automation frameworks) to support strategic objectives.
• Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for mainframe infrastructure projects, providing technical direction and governance.
• Provide advanced troubleshooting and resolution for escalated incidents beyond Level 1 support.
• Participate in after-hours and weekend support as required.
