Job summary

University of Maryland Medical System seeks an experienced inpatient coder to accurately code hospital accounts for reimbursement, research and compliance. You will analyze complex trauma and rehab cases, collaborate with CDI and senior coders, and ensure timely, compliant coding across departments.

Qualifications include a minimum of three years ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding, abtracting experience at a Level 1 Trauma/ Rehab hospital, and one of CCS/RHIT/RHIA/CIC credentials.

Qualifications

• Three years ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting experience at a Level 1 Trauma and Rehab hospital.
• One of CCS, RHIT, RHIA, CIC certifications is required.
• Knowledge of AHIMA standards and coding compliance.

Responsibilities

• Serves as a clinical coding subject matter expert, and analyzes and evaluates documentation issues with consultation from medical staff and CDI as needed.
• Analyzes, codes and abstracts complex inpatient cases such as trauma, rehab, neurology, critical care using ICD-10-CM/PCS to ensure accurate APR-DRG/SOI/ROM and POA assignment.
• Collaborates with senior coders and coding staff to share information and advise on complex cases.
• Monitors daily work to facilitate billing within established timeframes; codes and abstracts records accordingly.
• Maintains coding quality accuracy rate of 90% and productivity rate of 95%.
• Communicates with departments regarding billing and registration issues; composes coding queries and collaborates with CDI; understands PPCs/MHACs/PQI and impact.
• Communicates with the Auditing team to discuss findings and ensure accounts are properly coded for compliance.
• Complies with AHIMA ethical coding standards and coding compliance guidelines.
• Supports UMMS mission and policies and performs other duties or coding corrections as assigned by the manager.
