Rain is hiring a Head of Engineering to own the craft, quality, and technical direction of a ~50-person engineering org. You will lead enabled by direct reports and a group of managers, partnering with Product, Risk, and Compliance to support high transaction volume.

You will focus on design reviews, incident retros, hiring, and strategic bets, while staying hands-on about 30% of the time. If you enjoy coaching and building scalable systems that move real money, this role is for you.

Qualifications

• 5+ years building production software with prior leadership experience.
• Hands-on coding in the last year and ability to review production code.

Responsibilities

• Lead 4-6 senior backend/platform engineers, owning hiring and career development.
• Own architecture and technical direction of core services, data modeling, scalability and debt.
• Remain hands-on ~30% of time through PR reviews, prototyping, debugging, and implementation.
• Raise engineering standards across testing, observability, incident response, and on-call practices.
• Ensure reliability, auditability, and global money movement with SLOs and incident follow-through.
• Translate business goals into clear technical plans and communicate tradeoffs across stakeholders.
• Partner with Head of Engineering on org design, headcount, and scalable practices.
