Rain is hiring a Head of Engineering to own the craft, quality, and technical direction of a ~50-person engineering organization. You will lead through direct reports and managers, partnering with Product, Risk, and Compliance to scale systems that move money globally.

The role requires hands-on leadership, a track record of improving engineering standards, and experience in payments/fintech. We value strong communication and the ability to ship in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building production software, 3+ years in engineering management or tech lead roles.
• Hands-on coding experience within the last year.
• Experience with distributed backend systems at scale: data modeling, queues, event-driven design.
• Track record of raising engineering standards and measurable quality improvements.
• Reliability ownership: pager duty, incident response, post-mortems.
• Experience in payments/fintech or banking infrastructure.
• Strong hiring and coaching instincts with teams that would work for you again.
• Clear written communication, able to explain tradeoffs to execs and partners.

Responsibilities

• Lead a high-performing team of 4-6 senior backend and platform engineers.
• Own architecture and technical direction of Rain's core services.
• Remain hands-on ~30% of the time with code reviews and prototyping.
• Raise engineering standards across testing, observability, and on-call practices.
• Drive reliability, auditability, and platform maturity for global money movement.
• Translate business goals into technical plans and communicate tradeoffs.
• Partner with Head of Engineering on organizational design and headcount planning.
