Job summary

Rain is hiring a Head of Engineering to own the craft, quality, and technical direction of a ~50-person engineering organization. Lead through senior engineers and managers, partner with Product, Risk, and Compliance, and focus on design reviews, incident retros, and strategic bets to support high transaction volumes.

You are likely to succeed with 4+ years building production software, hands-on coding, and a track record in distributed systems, payments, or fintech.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building production software, including 3+ years managing and developing engineers.
• Hands-on experience with production code in the last year.
• Deep experience with distributed backend systems at scale.
• Track record of raising engineering bar with measurable improvements.
• Experience in payments/fintech or banking infrastructure is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead a 4-6 person senior backend and platform engineering team, including hiring and coaching.
• Own architecture and technical direction of core services; drive scalability and debt decisions.
• Remain hands-on ~30% of the time via reviews, prototyping, debugging, and implementation work.
• Raise engineering standards in testing, observability, incident response, on-call practices, and operational excellence.
• Ensure reliability, auditability, and governance for systems moving money globally.
• Translate business goals into sequenced technical plans and communicate tradeoffs and dependencies across teams.
• Collaborate with Head of Engineering on design, headcount planning, and scaling practices.
