Job summary

Rain is hiring a Head of Engineering to own the craft, quality, and technical direction of a ~30-person engineering organization. Lead through direct reports and managers, partner with Product, Risk, Compliance, and GTM to drive architecture and execution for high-volume payments infrastructure.

You will focus on design reviews, incident retros, hiring, and strategic bets to support 10x growth, while maintaining hands-on coding and architectural involvement in critical projects.

Qualifications

• 10+ years building production software.
• 4+ years leading engineers — Head of Engineering, Director, or Senior EM ideal.
• Hands-on coding within the last year.
• Deep experience with distributed backend systems at scale.
• Track record of raising engineering bar with measurable improvements.
• Reliability ownership including paging and incident response.
• Experience in payments/fintech/banking infrastructure.
• Strong hiring and coaching instincts.
• Clear written communication to diverse stakeholders.
• Experience with card issuing or payment networks.

Responsibilities

• Set and own engineering quality bar across design, review, testing, observability, and decision-making.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership by reviewing PRs, prototyping, and debugging production issues.
• Own the architecture and strategy for card issuing, wallets, ledger, and money movement.
• Drive reliability, scalability, and operational excellence with SLOs and capacity planning.
• Build security, compliance, and correctness into the platform by design.
• Increase engineering velocity without sacrificing quality via tooling and debt management.
• Build and develop a high-performing organization by coaching managers and aligning teams across functions.
