Rain is hiring a Head of Engineering in the United States to lead a ~50-person engineering org. You will drive technical direction, systems that move real money, and a culture of engineering excellence. You will coach managers, partner with Product/Risk/Compliance, and shape the roadmap to scale transaction volume.

You are hands-on, strategic, and comfortable with fast change in fintech. This role offers flexible work options including remote and in-office collaboration.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building production software with 3+ years in a people-lead role.
• Hands-on with production code within the last year.
• Deep experience with large-scale distributed backend systems.
• A track record of raising engineering standards.
• Real ownership of reliability, incident response, and postmortems.
• Experience in payments, fintech, or banking infrastructure.
• Strong hiring and coaching instincts with past reports who would work for you again.
• Ability to translate technical tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfort working with ambiguity and fast iteration.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a high-performing backend and platform team (4-6 seniors).
• Own architecture and technical direction of core services.
• Remain hands-on ~30% of the time for reviews and prototyping.
• Raise engineering standards around testing, observability, and on-call.
• Ensure reliability, auditability, and risk controls for global money movement.
• Turn business goals into sequenced technical plans with cross-functional alignment.
• Partner with Head of Engineering on design and scaling practices.
