Job summary

UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement in Evanston, IL seeks a Lead Azure Cloud Engineer to define, design, and advance enterprise cloud infrastructure. You will lead cloud initiatives across AWS/Azure/GCP, mentor MSP teams, and drive runbooks, SLAs, and standards.

The role emphasizes IaC (Terraform, CloudFormation), Ansible, GitHub Actions, and secure, scalable architectures, with a strong focus on collaboration, governance, and cost optimization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent.
• 8+ years in cloud engineering/architecture.
• 3+ years leading cloud transformation.
• Experience leading MSP/outside vendor teams.
• Hands-on with AWS, Azure, or GCP and multi-cloud.
• Strong security, IAM, Zero Trust knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise cloud infrastructure.
• Direct MSP-based engineering team and ensure runbooks and SLAs.
• Escalation lead for MSP-delivered services with vendor leadership guidance.
• Establish cloud architecture standards, governance, and best practices.
• Provide architectural guidance across teams for complex projects.
• Design and implement IaC strategies using Terraform (and CloudFormation when needed).
• Build configuration management/automation with Ansible (role design, inventory, drift remediation).
• Create CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions for provisioning, deployment, testing, policy enforcement, and release automation.
• Develop architecture documentation and operational procedures for staff and MSP partners.
• Mentor engineers, promote best practices, and lead cross-functional initiatives.
