Job summary

UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement seek a Lead Azure Cloud Engineer to guide enterprise cloud infrastructure strategy, architecture standards, and MSP vendor coordination from our Evanston, Illinois office.

You will architect scalable, secure, and cost-efficient cloud environments, mentor engineers, and drive modernization efforts across teams using Terraform and IaC practices, while maintaining hands-on delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in cloud engineering, cloud architecture, infrastructure engineering, or related areas.
• Minimum 3 years of experience leading complex cloud transformation, migration, modernization, or architecture initiatives.
• Demonstrated experience serving as a technical lead or principal contributor to cloud infrastructure initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise cloud infrastructure solutions across major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Direct an MSP-based technical team, assign work, review deliverables, coach engineers, and ensure runbooks, SLAs, and standards are followed.
• Serve as primary technical escalation point for MSP-delivered services, coordinating with vendor leadership on staffing, onboarding, and quality.
• Establish cloud architecture standards, governance frameworks, and best practices for scalability, security, and operations.
• Provide architectural guidance on complex projects and influence tech decisions across teams.
• Design and implement IaC strategies using Terraform as primary; use CloudFormation where needed.
• Build and maintain configuration management and server automation with Ansible; manage inventories and drift remediation.
• Create and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions for provisioning, deployment, testing, policy enforcement, and release automation.
• Develop architecture diagrams, implementation standards, and operational docs for staff and MSP partners.
• Mentor engineers and promote engineering best practices across the team.
• Lead department-wide or cross-functional initiatives as needed.
