Job summary

UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement in Evanston, IL seeks a Lead Azure Cloud Engineer to define, design, and advance enterprise cloud infrastructure strategies. This senior IC leads cloud initiatives across AWS/Azure/GCP, mentors engineers, and directs a managed MSP team to deliver secure, scalable, and cost-efficient cloud solutions.

You will establish architecture standards, build IaC with Terraform and CloudFormation, and manage CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
• 8+ years of experience in cloud engineering, cloud architecture, or related areas
• 3+ years of experience leading cloud transformation, migration, or modernization initiatives
• Experience leading a technical team including MSP/outsourced partners
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise cloud infrastructure solutions across major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform)
• Direct an MSP-based technical team with runbooks, SLAs, and engineering standards
• Serve as the primary technical escalation point for MSP-delivered services and collaborate with vendor leadership
• Establish cloud architecture standards, governance frameworks, and best practices
• Provide architectural guidance for complex infrastructure projects across teams
• Design and implement IaC strategies using Terraform as primary provisioning standard, with CloudFormation where needed
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions for infrastructure provisioning and deployment
• Develop and maintain architecture diagrams and operational procedures
• Mentor and coach engineering team members on best practices
• Lead cross-functional initiatives
