Job summary

Premera Blue Cross is seeking an AI Engineer IV to lead the development of AI/ML solutions, mentor engineers, and guide governance and best practices. This remote role focuses on scalable AI infrastructure, data pipelines, and productionizing models.

You will collaborate with stakeholders, design low-latency APIs, and ensure high-quality documentation and peer reviews. Strong software engineering and ethical AI experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field, or 2+ years of experience in a related, professional IT/analytics position.
• Minimum of 5 years of industry experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining AI or ML systems. Up to two years of industry experience may be substituted with an AI centered Master's/PhD or AI Engineering certifications.
• Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLX, JAX, or other modern deep learning frameworks (6+ years).
• Experience with design patterns and microservices architecture, including at least 3 years with container orchestration in a production environment.
• Knowledge of and experience in implementing ethical AI practices, with at least 3 years spent on explainable AI, fairness, and bias mitigation.
• At least 3 years of expertise in implementing advanced techniques like Retrieval Augmented Generation, Tree of Thoughts, or Multimodal CoT in prompt engineering projects. Leadership in prompt engineering teams and code reviews is essential.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in productionizing AI models, including scalable data pipelines and monitoring systems.
• At least 5 years working within Agile‑like teams and environments.

Responsibilities

• Recommend and develop comprehensive systems and frameworks for AI applications and products.
• Pitch concepts to team leadership and lead construction of prototypes and MVPs to validate AI/ML solutions.
• Assist in designing and implementing the cloud architecture of large multi‑faced AI systems.
• Assist in the design and scaffolding of robust data pipelines that drive large complex AI systems.
• Develop specifications for low latency APIs and services to deploy AI models and integrate them into applications.
• Develop the code for monitoring models and AI systems to ensure reliable performance.
• Participate in a team that practices principled, agile‑like development processes.
• Create and maintain documentation consistent with team procedures and policies.
• Ensure peer reviews on all assigned work and review others' work as requested.
• Guide AI engineers on AI/ML and industry best practices and methodologies.
• Stay updated with new tools and concepts and practice skills development.
• Advise leadership on enterprise AI strategies, roadmaps, and infrastructure strategies.
