Job summary

South Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker in Chamberlain to keep state highways safe and drivable. The role includes operating heavy equipment, performing road maintenance, and responding to emergencies, with varying schedules including weekends and holidays.

A valid driver's license is needed and a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement may be required within 120 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Experience operating heavy equipment or farming/ranching equipment is preferred.
• Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide) are expected.
• Basic computer operation is desirable.
• Must have or obtain a valid CDL within 120 days of hire; Class A with tanker endorsement may be required.

Responsibilities

• Perform roadway maintenance and repair activities to keep highways safe and drivable.
• Install and replace signs, traffic control devices, and pavement markings; maintain guardrails and facilities.
• Respond to emergencies and weather-related incidents; work in outdoor conditions and traffic environments.
• Operate and maintain a variety of equipment and tools; participate in on-the-job training and supervision.
