Job summary

The South Dakota Department of Transportation in Salem seeks a Highway Maintenance Worker to ensure highways remain safe and drivable. Duties include operating heavy equipment, performing repairs, and maintaining road infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Experience in operation of heavy equipment/farming or ranching equipment and/or experience in heavy construction is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform roadway maintenance activities to keep highways safe and drivable.
• Install and replace signs, traffic control devices, and pavement markings; maintain guardrail systems.
• Operate and repair a variety of equipment and tools; provide on-the-job training and work direction.
• Work schedules include 10-hour days, 4 days/week (May–Sept) or 8-hour days, Mon–Fri (Oct–Apr); night/weekend work during emergencies and inclement weather.
