Job summary

South Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker to keep state highways safe and drivable. The role involves working in a crew, performing roadway maintenance, sign installation, and pavement markings, and handling equipment maintenance.

Expect varied schedules with long hours during peak seasons and potential night shifts. A valid license is required and CDL with tanker endorsement must be obtained within 120 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Experience operating heavy equipment or farming/ranching equipment preferred.
• Basic math skills for calculations and measurements.
• Ability to lift 35 pounds routinely, up to 60 pounds occasionally, and 90+ pounds infrequently.
• Valid driver license and ability to obtain Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within 120 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Maintain state highways to keep them safe and drivable.
• Perform roadway and roadside maintenance; install signs and pavement markings.
• Operate and maintain equipment; respond to emergencies and incidents.
• Provide on-the-job training and work direction; support public safety activities.
