Job summary

Affirm is building its own bank and seeks a Staff Software Engineer to anchor a small, AI-native team. You’ll own the architecture, standards, and technical strategy for core banking surfaces, including cloud infrastructure, data platform, and third‑party integrations, with direct exposure to leadership.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with staff-level, hands-on builder credentials and a track record of owning ambiguous, high-stakes systems end-to-end through launch and operations.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction across the bank's systems, owning long-term strategy for core surfaces including cloud, data, configuration, CI/CD, networking, and integration.
• Own the hardest problems end-to-end, designing, building, integrating, and operating high-stakes components with clear failure domains and runbooks.
• Be the force multiplier on a small team by enforcing code/design review standards and scalable patterns.
• Ship AI‑first capabilities, leveraging agentic workflows to enhance code, designs, and operations.
• Lead vendor selection and ownership, evaluating and integrating third-party platforms across core, data, identity, observability, and card-processing stacks.
• Define integration boundaries with affirm inc to ensure bank products work seamlessly within the affirm ecosystem while maintaining charter compliance.
• Build for examiners by partnering with legal/compliance/risk and documenting systems to withstand audits.
• Own operational posture including reliability, observability, alerting, runbooks, incident response, and disaster recovery.
• Influence the organization by communicating strategy to executives, the board, compliance, risk, and neighboring engineers.
• Grow the team and set a high bar by mentoring peers and contributing to hiring.
