Job summary

Rate is seeking a hands-on Software Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing, cross-functional engineering team. You will contribute to architecture, design, and delivery of core systems while mentoring engineers and ensuring scalable, high-quality software.

The role combines leadership with coding and architecture work, driving product innovation in a remote-friendly setting. A strong background in Java/React/Node.js and cloud platforms is required.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software development experience.
• 4+ years in an engineering leadership or team lead role with direct reports.
• Deep expertise in Java, React, Node.js, Python etc.
• Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, or containerization.
• Experience designing scalable systems and working with cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure).
• Strong communication and people skills; you can inspire and align stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead by example — write, review, and ship production-quality code regularly (~30–50% of time).
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering to deliver features that drive business outcomes.
• Mentor, coach, and grow engineers through regular 1:1s and career planning.
• Drive the team to use AI methods to increase development productivity.
• Own team execution and delivery: set priorities, remove blockers, and keep projects on track.
• Define and drive engineering best practices including testing, CI/CD, system design, and code quality.
• Participate in architecture reviews and shape long-term technical direction.
• Recruit and onboard top engineering talent.
