Job summary

GFT is seeking a Sr. Physical Substation Designer to lead high-voltage substation projects up to 500 kV. The role supports multiple U.S.

sites in a hybrid/remote arrangement. You will develop detailed designs, perform critical calculations, and mentor junior engineers while focusing on safety, cost, and reliability. The ideal candidate has 7+ years in substation or T&D design, CAD expertise (AutoCAD/MicroStation), and a degree preference for an associate level.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant substation or general electrical T&D designing experience.
• Expertise in AutoCAD or MicroStation CAD tools.
• Associate Degree strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and Design Guide for Rural Substations.
• Ability to review and coordinate vendor submittals for design conformance.
• Knowledge of substation voltages (MV, HV, EHV) and clearances.
• Ability to develop complete construction documents with minimal supervision.
• Ability to create control enclosure, cable tray layouts, conduit drawings.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute high-voltage substations in the 34.5kV–500kV range with safety, cost, quality, and reliability in mind.
• Generate designs and detailed engineering deliverables under supervision.
• Detail physical aspects such as GA, elevations, grounding and conduit drawings.
• Perform basic engineering calculations for deliverables.
• Follow supervisor instructions for complex design tasks.
• Use CAD tools to create drawings and deliverables.
• Inspect installations to ensure conformance with design and specs.
• Oversee project production to meet schedule and budget.
• Prepare technical drawings and specs for electrical systems installation.
• Travel to job sites for data gathering as needed.
