Job summary

GFT is seeking a Sr. Physical Substation Designer to support high voltage projects up to 500 kV. You will work on physical design, general arrangement, grounding, and conduit layouts, collaborating with lead engineers across multiple U.S.

locations. Hybrid work is available with opportunities to travel to job sites for data collection. The ideal candidate brings 7+ years in substation or electrical T&D design, strong CAD skills (AutoCAD/MicroStation), and familiarity with NEC/IEEE/ANSI

Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant substation or general electrical T&D designing experience.
• Thorough knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and rural substation design guides.
• Ability to reviews and coordinate vendor submittals for design compliance.
• Knowledge of substation phase spacing and electrical clearance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Design and execution of high-voltage substations projects in the 34.5kV–500kV range with emphasis on safety, cost, quality and reliability.
• Generate designs and detailed engineering deliverables under supervision of lead engineer.
• Detail physical aspects of the engineering design including general arrangement, elevation, grounding and conduit drawings.
• Complete basic engineering calculations related to deliverables.
• Follow supervisor instructions for complex design tasks requiring standard principles.
• Use CAD tools to create drawings and deliverables.
• Prepare and study technical drawings and specifications to ensure installation conforms to standards.
• Travel to job sites for data gathering and return with field notes to complete design.
• Oversee project production to ensure timely, on-budget completion.
