Job summary

GFT is seeking a Sr. Physical Substation Designer to join the power team. The role supports HV substation design up to 500kV, with hybrid/remote options for the right candidate.

The team focuses on reliable, sustainable energy infrastructure across multiple locations including Charlotte, Roanoke, Marlton, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Chicago, and Phoenix. The candidate will contribute to safe, cost-effective, and compliant designs, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with engineers to deliver complex

Qualifications

• 7+ years of substation or electrical T&D design experience.
• Proficient with AutoCAD or MicroStation.
• Associate Degree strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, and rural substation design guides.
• Ability to review vendor submittals for design conformance.
• Understanding substation voltages (MV, HV, EHV) and clearances.
• Ability to develop complete construction documents with minimal supervision.
• Ability to sketch single line diagrams, layouts, grounding, and conduit plans.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute HV substations 34.5kV–500kV with safety, cost, quality focus.
• Create drawings and deliverables under lead engineer supervision.
• Detail general arrangements, elevations, grounding, conduit drawings.
• Perform engineering calculations and validate designs.
• Use CAD tools to produce drawings and specs.
• Ensure installations meet design and safety standards; inspect field work.
• Oversee project production to meet schedule and budget.
• Prepare technical drawings and specifications per project/client specs.
