Job summary

GFT is seeking a Sr. Physical Substation Designer to drive high‑voltage projects up to 500 kV. The role supports multiple locations with hybrid/remote options for the right candidate, joining a skilled power team focused on reliability and sustainability.

You will lead detailed layouts, perform calculations, and oversee drawings for safety and quality, collaborating with senior engineers while traveling to sites as needed to gather field data and ensure designs meet client specs.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant substation or general electrical T&D design experience.
• Expertise in CAD tools such as AutoCAD or MicroStation.
• Strong knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI standards and design guides.
• Ability to review and coordinate vendor submittals to ensure compliance.
• Knowledge of substation phase spacing and electrical clearance requirements.
• Capability to develop and review complete construction documents with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Design and execution of high-voltage substations projects from 34.5kV to 500kV with safety, cost, quality and reliability focus.
• Generate designs and detailed deliverables under supervision of Lead Engineer.
• Detail general arrangement, elevation, grounding and conduit drawings.
• Perform engineering calculations and ensure conformance to standards.
• Create control enclosure, cable tray and conduit layouts with CAD tools.
• Travel to job sites for data gathering and return with field notes for design completion.
