Job summary

GFT is seeking a Physical Designer (Substation) to work on high-voltage projects across the United States, with remote options. The role focuses on physical design for substations up to 500 kV, including GA, elevations, grounding, and conduit layouts, under senior guidance.

Requires 3+ years in substation design, CAD proficiency (AutoCAD/MicroStation), and knowledge of NEC/IEEE/NESC. Salary ranges from $77k to $100k with full benefits and potential travel.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of relevant substation or electrical T&D design experience.
• Proficient in CAD tools such as AutoCAD or MicroStation.
• Associate Degree strongly preferred.
• Solid knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI standards.
• Ability to review vendor submittals for design compliance.
• Understanding substation voltages, duct banks, and clearances.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute high-voltage substations from 34.5kV to 500kV focusing on safety, cost, quality.
• Generate designs and detailed deliverables under supervision of lead engineer.
• Detail physical aspects: GA, elevations, grounding and conduit drawings.
• Perform basic engineering calculations for deliverables.
• Follow supervisor instructions for complex design tasks.
• Create drawings using standard CAD tools.
• Compute manufacturing, construction, and installation standards.
• Inspect installations for conformance to specs and safety.
• Oversee project production to meet schedule and budget.
• Prepare technical drawings and specifications for electrical systems.
• Travel to job sites for assessment and data gathering.
