Job summary

GFT is seeking a Sr. Physical Substation Designer to lead high-voltage substation design efforts through 500kV.

The role offers hybrid work with potential remote arrangements for the right candidate and involves design, calculations, and CAD deliverables for utilities and renewable projects. You will contribute to safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery systems, mentoring junior staff and coordinating with engineering teams.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of relevant substation or electrical T&D designing experience.
• Thorough knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, and Design Guide for Rural Substations.
• Ability to review and coordinate vendor submittals to ensure design parameter compliance.
• Knowledge of substation voltages (MV, HV, EHV) and duct bank concepts.
• Ability to develop and review a complete set of construction documents from client specs.

Responsibilities

• Design and execution of high-voltage substations projects in the 34.5kV–500kV range.
• Generate designs and detailed engineering deliverables under supervision.
• Detail physical aspects: general arrangement, elevation, grounding and conduit drawings.
• Complete basic engineering calculations related to deliverables.
• Follow supervisor instructions for complex design tasks using standard principles.
• Use CAD tools to create drawings and related deliverables.
• Perform detailed calculations to establish manufacturing, construction and installation standards.
• Inspect installations and operations for conformance to design/specifications.
• Oversee project production to ensure on-time, on-budget completion.
• Prepare and study technical drawings/specifications for electrical systems.
• Travel to job sites for assessment and data gathering.
