Job summary

Helm Health Corporation is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to own provider search, ranking, and copay lookup APIs. This hands-on leader will guide architecture, design, and scaling of external-facing APIs and SDKs, mentoring engineers while setting technical direction.

The role emphasizes Go, Python, and TypeScript, public API design, and building a scalable API surface for Helm’s Dynamic Copay platform. This fully remote position offers competitive compensation and equity.

Qualifications

• 8+ years building backend services and distributed systems.
• Experience with production search/ranking systems and tradeoffs between recall, precision, and latency.
• Experience with multiple search paradigms (keyword, vector, and LLM-driven) and when to use each.
• Track record shipping public APIs and multi-language client libraries for external developers.
• Ability to set architectural direction, write design docs, and raise the bar for engineers.

Responsibilities

• Drive technical direction, implementation, and production support for client-facing gRPC APIs and SDKs (provider search, ranking, copay lookups).
• Lead API design decisions for long-term viability: versioning, backward compatibility, field masks, error semantics, and gRPC conventions for external integrations.
• Design and evolve ranking/steerage logic balancing relevance, network status, cost, and plan-specific incentives.
• Ensure scalability and reliability under production load: geofenced queries, rate limiting, retries, and graceful degradation.
• Collaborate with product/partner teams to shape external SDKs and developer experience.
