Job summary

University of Utah Health - UMB is seeking an experienced Medical Coder II to join a fully remote department supporting the University of Utah School of Medicine. The role focuses on translating clinical diagnoses and procedures into standardized codes for physicians, hospitals, and insurers, with HIPAA compliance and scheduled hours (M-F, Mountain Time).

The ideal candidate will have AHIMA or AAPC certification and at least 1 year of medical billing or coding experience.

Qualifications

• 1 year of related work experience in medical billing.
• Preferred 1 year of coding experience.
• Certification with AHIMA or AAPC required.

Responsibilities

• Multi-specialty coding.
• Review charges and address missing/incomplete documentation.
• Code multiple subspecialty services and assign coding classifications.
• Use internal/external coding resources to code the episode of care.
• Resolve coding and charging issues in Epic work queues.
• Apply regulatory guidelines to coding and reimbursement decisions.
• Abstract medical/administrative data and verify patient info.
• Participate in meetings to discuss coding issues.
• Present information and assist in coding training.
• Provider onboarding and quarterly coding/billing meetings.
• Mentor L1 Coders.
• Meet productivity expectations.
