Job summary

University Medical Billing (UMB) is seeking a Medical Coder II for its fully remote team. You will translate medical records into precise codes for inpatient and outpatient settings, working under moderate supervision with HIPAA-compliant practices.

Responsibilities include multi-specialty coding, reviewing documentation, and collaborating with providers to ensure accurate billing. AHIMA/APCP certification and 1 year of experience are required.

Qualifications

• Equivalency statement: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience.
• Medical Coder II requires at least 1 year of related experience.
• AHIMA or AAPC Certification required.
• High school education or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Multi-specialty Coding.
• Review charges and report on missing, incomplete, or inconsistent documentation by contacting appropriate personnel.
• Review, abstract, and code multiple/subspecialty services and assign appropriate coding classification.
• Utilize internal and external coding resources and processes to accurately code the episode of care for inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Practice the resolution of coding and charging issues captured by edits in the Epic work queues.
• Interpret and apply basic regulatory guidelines to coding and reimbursement decisions.
• Abstract required medical and administrative data, verifying applicable care providers, medical record number, account number, visit times and dates.
• Participate in meetings with providers, hospital staff, and clinic managers to provide feedback on coding related issues.
• Present information and assist in coding/billing training efforts.
• Provider Onboarding. Quarterly coding/billing meetings among multiple surgical groups.
• Assists with other department coding needs as requested, such as mentoring L1 Coders.
• Meet department and individual productivity expectations.
