Job summary

UNC Health in North Carolina seeks a hospital coder to review, abstract, and assign accepted CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10 codes for professional services. You will work remotely after onboarding, ensuring compliance with third-party, state, and federal rules while handling tasks independently and reporting to an administrative supervisor.

Requirements include a high school diploma or IP Coder Proficiency Test, 2 years hospital coding experience, and AHIMA or AAPC certification.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; IP Coder Proficiency Test may satisfy requirement.
• AHIMA or AAPC certification preferred or required.
• Two years hospital coding experience.
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10 coding and regulation awareness.

Responsibilities

• Assign ICD-10-CM diagnostic and ICD-10-PCS procedural codes for professional services.
• Group codes and complete products into payment groups.
• Assign codes affecting Severity of Illness and Risk of Mortality and HCCs.
• Participate in DRG reconciliation with CDS.
• Query providers for documentation clarification and specificity.
• Analyze information for optimal reimbursement.
• Ensure compliance with coding, billing and data collection rules.
• Provide guidance on coding changes to physicians and staff.
• Review and abstract physician documentation for diagnoses and services.
• Obtain missing information or clarify existing data.
• Incorporate audit feedback for education and error reduction.
• Research databases to validate information.
• Use Epic, Optum CAC, MS Office and other tools to compile data.
