Job summary

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED with the UNC HCS IP Coder Proficiency Test, and 2 years of hospital coding experience.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of ICD-10 coding with analytical and data mining skills.
• Ability to work with staff at multiple levels and communicate clearly.
• Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and regulatory interpretation.

Responsibilities

• Assign ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS codes for professional services and DRGs.
• Group codes and organize into payment groups.
• Assign codes affecting Severity of Illness and Risk of Mortality and HCCs.
• Participate in DRG reconciliation with CDS.
• Query providers for documentation clarity and specificity.
• Analyze information for optimal reimbursement and compliance with regulations.
• Inform physicians and staff about current coding guidelines and changes.
• Review and abstract documentation for diagnoses and procedures.
• Obtain missing information and clarify existing data.
• Incorporate auditor feedback for educational purposes and error reduction.
• Research databases to validate information.
