Job summary

SOLV Energy, Inc. is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation to own the preliminary substation design for solar, BESS, and related interconnection projects.

This role serves as the primary technical owner from BD kickoff through Design-to-Preconstruction handoff, aligning design basis, scope, schedule, and risks. The position is fully remote and requires strong knowledge of substation design principles, protections, and industry standards, with travel up to 10%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is required.
• Minimum 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Familiarity with electrical design software such as AutoCAD or ETAP.
• Strong understanding of substation design principles, protection schemes, and industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC).

Responsibilities

• Own the preliminary substation design for assigned pursuits and projects, defining design basis, assumptions, equipment needs, layouts, and risks.
• Review client documents, PPAs, interconnection agreements, and related information to identify requirements and scope.
• Serve as primary SME for substation design and coordinate inputs from engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, scheduling, and others.
• Lead development of 10% design including single-line diagrams and general arrangement drawings.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align design, quantities, scope narrative, and schedule.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps or exclusions.
• Deliver owner-reviewed preliminary design to estimating and BD per stage-gate schedule.
• Participate in client meetings, explain design assumptions, identify risks, and clarify requirements.
• Support contractual exhibit reviews, markups, and responses to facilitate LNTP, escalating significant risks.
• Prepare and issue proposal information and coordinate with EORs or subcontractors as required.
• Prepare engineering scope, schedule inputs, risks, and handoff details for Preconstruction Engineering.
• Review preliminary deliverables for alignment with PPA, IA, utility and vendor requirements.
• Propose constructible and cost-effective design alternatives in collaboration with teams.
