Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a 5–8 person team on the Enterprise Learning & Skills platform. You will guide design discussions, maintain engineering standards, and ensure timely delivery while supporting growth and onboarding.

The role emphasizes people leadership, collaboration with Product, Customer Success, and vendors, and a strong focus on secure, scalable systems. Remote-friendly, with exposure to AI tooling in development.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience and 2+ years managing or formally leading a software engineering team.
• Working familiarity with core stack: Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL and API management, cloud computing, DevOps practices and software design.
• Proven track record of reliable daily delivery, adherence to coding and QA standards, and timely task completion.
• Strong problem-solving skills, collaborative and communicative across stakeholders and vendors.
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers, with evidence of ramp-up time reduction.
• Judgment on when to localize vs escalate issues, and adaptability to evolving teams and tooling.
• Understanding of information and data security fundamentals and ethical decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5–8 engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends, owning well-being, performance, and output.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work, monitor delivery schedules, and keep projects on track with clear priorities.
• Troubleshoot obstacles, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs across engineers, teams, and vendors.
• Triage bugs and production issues with attention to detail to minimize customer disruption.
• Maintain standards of quality, including coding/QA standards, code review, tests, and documentation.
• Provide real-time feedback, conduct 1:1s, and celebrate team milestones while recognizing individual contributions.
• Own onboarding and skill development for new members to reduce ramp-up time.
• Identify and introduce process improvements, escalating higher-impact issues when needed.
• Champion responsible use of AI-assisted development tools for coding, testing, and learning.
• Uphold secure, ethical, and resilient engineering practices across releases.
