Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a 5–8 person software team on the Enterprise Learning & Skills platform. You will guide Ruby on Rails services and React frontends, ensuring delivery, quality, and growth while collaborating with Product, Customer Success, and external vendors.

The role emphasizes onboarding, process improvements, and leadership across a globally used API-driven platform that issues and verifies digital credentials.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience and 2+ years managing or formally leading a software engineering team.
• Working familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL and with API management, cloud computing, DevOps practices.
• Proven track record of running a team\'s daily delivery reliably with coding and QA standards.
• Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills.
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers and reducing ramp-up time.
• Sound judgment on escalation and continuous learning in evolving tech.
• Understanding of information and data security fundamentals and ethical decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5–8 engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends, owning wellbeing and output.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work, monitor progress, and keep projects on track with clear priorities.
• Troubleshoot blockers, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs with engineers, teams, and vendors.
• Triage bugs and production issues with attention to detail to minimize customer disruption.
• Maintain coding, QA, and documentation standards and ensure test thoroughness.
• Provide real-time feedback, conduct regular 1:1s, and celebrate milestones.
• Own onboarding and skill development for new team members.
• Identify and push process improvements and escalate high-impact issues to leadership.
• Champion responsible use of AI tools for coding, testing, and learning across the team.
• Uphold secure and resilient engineering practices across all shipped work.
