Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of 5–8 software engineers on the Enterprise Learning & Skills platform. You’ll own the day-to-day health, output, and growth of the team, guiding design discussions without writing production code, and partnering with Product, Customer Success, and vendors.

You’ll manage priorities, unblock blockers, and coach engineers to raise the bar on quality and speed, while promoting secure, scalable software practices across the organization.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience and 2+ years managing or formally leading a software engineering team.
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL and API management; capable of guiding discussions and evaluating trade-offs.
• Proven track record of reliable daily delivery, adherence to coding and QA standards, and timely task completion.
• Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication with engineers, stakeholders, and vendors.
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers with shorter ramp-up times and growing team capability.
• Judgment on when to resolve issues locally or escalate, and ability to drive improvements responsibly.
• Commitment to continuous learning as technology and teams evolve; understanding of security fundamentals.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5–8 engineers building Rails services and React frontends.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work, monitor progress, and keep projects on track.
• Troubleshoot blockers, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs across teams and vendors.
• Triage bugs and production issues with attention to detail to minimize customer disruption.
• Maintain standards of quality, coding and QA practices, and team documentation.
• Provide real-time feedback, conduct regular 1:1s, and celebrate milestones.
• Own onboarding and skill development for new team members.
• Identify and suggest team-level process improvements and escalate high-impact issues when needed.
• Champion responsible use of AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity and quality.
