Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to advance healthcare data platform modernization. The role focuses on migrating from MSSQL XML stores to cloud-native AWS architecture, enabling performant SQL-based reporting for stakeholders.

Required are 8+ years of AWS-focused data engineering, strong SQL, and experience with XML data. Remote work is offered, with compliance and security being priorities in this government-adjacent program.

Qualifications

8+ years of software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
Proven experience architecting and migrating cloud data platforms in production environments.
Track record of evaluating AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
Experience delivering analytics solutions for non-technical users.
Deep hands-on AWS data services knowledge (S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
Strong SQL skills for relational layers over XML/JSON.
Experience with XML-heavy data stores and XML processing at scale.
Familiarity with CI/CD practices using AWS tools.
Knowledge of AWS analytics/BI tooling (Athena, QuickSight, RedShift).
Proficiency with Git/GitHub and collaborative workflows.
IaC with AWS CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
Ability to communicate architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
Experience translating business requirements into data models.

Responsibilities

Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
Shift from MSSQL XML object store to a scalable AWS data architecture for SQL-based reporting.
Decide the optimal AWS data strategy and storage/compute mix for XML data.
Design and build a reporting layer enabling SQL queries for business users.
Plan migration of XML object store data into the AWS platform with partitioning and formats.
Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
Coordinate with .NET engineers to ensure smooth data flows from EDI pipelines.
Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infra using AWS-native tools.
Apply IaC practices using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
Document architecture decisions and data flows clearly.
