Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to drive modernization of a healthcare data platform. This remote, W-2 role focuses on AWS-native architecture, SQL-based reporting, and scalable data storage solutions supporting business analysts.

You will orchestrate migration from MSSQL XML storage to a cloud-native AWS setup, design data catalogs, and optimize costs and performance while collaborating with stakeholders and a .NET engineering team.

Qualifications

• Over 8 years of software or data engineering with AWS focus.
• Experience architecting cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
• Proven ability to select AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering analytics for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Strong SQL for relational queries over XML/JSON data.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and transforming XML at scale.
• Ability to evaluate AWS data service trade-offs by cost and performance.
• Familiarity with BI tools like QuickSight or similar.
• Proficiency with GitHub workflows and CI/CD in AWS.
• IaC with CDK/CloudFormation or Terraform.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Move from MSSQL XML object store to scalable AWS data architecture for SQL reports.
• Decide AWS data strategy and storage/query architecture (S3+Athena, Aurora, etc.).
• Design reporting layer for SQL queries via familiar tools for business users.
• Architect migration of XML data from MSSQL into AWS, with storage formats and partitioning.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
• Work with .NET engineers to ensure data flows from EDI pipelines to the new layer.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS-native tools; apply IaC practices with CDK/TF.
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries clearly.
