Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to modernize a healthcare data platform in a remote capacity. You will drive migration from MSSQL/XML stores to AWS-based storage and query architectures, enabling SQL-based reporting for business users with scalable, cost-aware solutions.

The role requires extensive AWS experience, hands-on data services, and collaboration with stakeholders and back-end developers. A Public Trust level clearance is preferred; U.S.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
• Track record of evaluating and selecting AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services including S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Strong SQL skills to design relational query layers over XML/JSON.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and data transformation at scale.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices and AWS-native tooling (CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy).
• IaC experience (AWS CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform).
• Strong ability to communicate architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Architect and migrate XML object store data to AWS platform with scalable storage formats.
• Design reporting layers enabling SQL-based queries by business users.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with back-end developers to ensure seamless data flow from ETL / EDI pipelines.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure using AWS-native tooling.
• Document architecture decisions, data flows, and data dictionaries.
