Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to drive the modernization of a healthcare data platform. You will lead the migration from MSSQL XML object stores to a scalable AWS-based architecture and enable analysts to run SQL queries and reports with ease.

You will evaluate AWS data services, design the reporting layer, and collaborate with a .NET team. Remote work is supported for U.S.-based candidates, with a focus on secure, compliant cloud solutions.

Qualifications

8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
Track record of evaluating and selecting AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical users.
Hands-on AWS data services such as S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch.
Strong SQL skills and ability to query XML/JSON data.
Experience with XML-heavy data stores, including parsing and transforming XML at scale.
Ability to evaluate trade-offs across AWS data services and make architecture recommendations.
Familiarity with AWS analytics & BI tooling (Athena, QuickSight, Redshift).
Git/GitHub proficiency, CI/CD with AWS tooling, IaC (CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform).
Strong communication of architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
Experience gathering business reporting requirements into technical data models.
Familiarity with Agile methodologies and JIRA.
Excellent documentation habits for architecture diagrams and data dictionaries.

Responsibilities

Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
Evolve from MSSQL XML object store toward scalable, cloud-native AWS architecture.
Evaluate the right AWS data strategy for the platform.
Recommend optimal AWS-native data storage and query architecture for XML data.
Design and build a reporting layer for SQL queries against healthcare data.
Architect migration of XML object store data into the AWS platform with efficient formats.
Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
Work with back-end .NET engineers to ensure data flows from EDI pipelines.
Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS-native tools.
Apply IaC practices using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
Document architecture decisions and data flows for technical and non-technical audiences.
