Job summary

ChristianaCare's Project Engage is seeking a compassionate Full-Time Peer Counselor I to support the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department. The role relies on lived experience with substance use disorder to engage patients and connect them with community resources.

You will screen, assess, provide coaching, and coordinate linkage to treatment, working with staff across ED units and community providers. This position requires self-disclosure when appropriate and commitment to certification

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Peer Counselor with lived experience of SUD or mental health disorder; willing to self-disclose and pursue certification within one year of hire.
• One year experience in the mental health field (voluntary or paid) required.

Responsibilities

• Screen, assess, and link individuals with substance use treatment in the community after discharge.
• Engage patients using lived experience to motivate acceptance of treatment and service linkages.
• Conduct motivational interviewing to understand barriers and connect to appropriate care.
• Educate patients and families on risks of drug/alcohol use and Narcan safety.
• Submit timely referrals and follow up on treatment acceptance.
