Job summary

ChristianaCare’s Project Engage is seeking a compassionate, dependable Full-Time Peer Counselor I to work in the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department. This role relies on your lived experience with SUD to engage patients, assess needs, and link them to services after discharge.

You will collaborate with ED staff, discharge coordinators, and community providers, using motivational interviewing to support recovery, educate on Narcan, and document engagements daily.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• The Peer Counselor is an individual who has a unique perspective because of his/her own experience with SUD or mental health disorder.
• S/he must be willing to self-disclose as appropriate and to attend training leading to certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist within one year of hire.
• One year experience working in the mental health field in voluntary or paid position required.

Responsibilities

• Screen, assess, and link individuals with substance use disorders to treatment in the community following discharge.
• Engage patients using lived experience to encourage acknowledgement of need for treatment and service linkages.
• Conduct motivational interviewing to understand barriers and direct patients to appropriate level of care.
• Educate patients and families on Narcan safety and provide Narcan when appropriate.
• Submit referrals and coordinate care with ED staff, discharge coordinators, and community resources.
• Document engagements daily and communicate pertinent information to the team.
