Job summary

Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington is seeking a Full-Time Peer Counselor I to support our Emergency Department. The role requires a peer with lived experience recovering from SUD, who can engage patients, screen and link them to community treatment and support their recovery.

The position emphasizes motivational interviewing, collaboration with ED staff, discharge coordinators, and community providers, with a schedule including Sundays and later weekday shifts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required.
• Peer counselor must have lived experience with SUD or mental health disorder.
• Must self-disclose as appropriate and attend training for certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist within one year of hire.
• One year experience in mental health field required.

Responsibilities

• Screen individuals for signs of substance use and link to treatment post-discharge.
• Engage patients using lived experience to encourage treatment uptake.
• Conduct motivational interviewing to understand barriers and guide to care.
• Educate patients and families on Narcan safety and usage.
• Submit referrals and follow up on treatment after discharge.
• Coordinate care with ED staff, discharge coordinators and community providers.
