Job summary

ChristianaCare Health System is seeking a compassionate Peer Counselor I to support patients in the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department. The role relies on lived experience with SUD to engage and link patients to community treatment after discharge.

You will work the 11:00pm–9:30am shift Wednesday through Saturday, providing coaching, motivational interviewing, and education to patients and families to support recovery and safe transition from the hospital.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Willing to self-disclose and attend training leading to certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist within one year of hire.
• One year experience working in the mental health field in voluntary or paid position required.

Responsibilities

• Screen and assess individuals with signs of SUD and link to treatment post-discharge.
• Engage patients using lived experience to support recovery and service linkages.
• Conduct motivational interviewing to understand barriers and direct appropriate care.
• Educate patients and families on Narcan safety and provide Narcan where appropriate.
• Identify available treatment options and submit timely referrals; follow up on outcomes.
• Coordinate with ED staff, discharge coordinators, and community providers to plan care and discharge.
• Document daily engagements and update relevant forms.

Education

Willingness to certify as Certified Peer Recovery Specialist within 1 year
