Job summary

ChristianaCare's Project Engage is seeking a compassionate, dependable Full-Time Peer Counselor I to support the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department. The role leverages lived experience with SUD to engage patients, link to services, and assist with discharge planning.

Responsibilities include screening, motivational interviewing, educating on Narcan safety, and coordinating referrals. Requires high school diploma and 1+ year mental health experience; must pursue certification within a year.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Willing to self‑disclose SUD/mental health history and pursue certification within 1 year of hire.
• At least 1 year of experience in mental health field (voluntary or paid).

Responsibilities

• Screen and link individuals to community treatment after discharge.
• Use lived experience to engage patients and support service linkages.
• Conduct bedside motivational interviewing to address barriers.
• Educate patients and family on substance use dangers and Narcan use.
• Submit referrals via Open Beds and follow up on treatment.
• Coordinate with ED staff for discharge planning for treatment seekers.
• Document daily engagements on required forms.
• Assist clients in goal setting based on assessments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
