Job summary

ChristianaCare’s Project Engage seeks a compassionate, dependable Full-Time Peer Counselor I to support the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department. The peer counselor will engage individuals with lived experience of SUD to link them to community resources and ensure continuity of care after discharge.

The role requires self-disclosure as appropriate and certification training within one year of hire, with a typical schedule of 11:00pm–9:30am, Wednesday through Saturday, in Newark, DE.

Qualifications

• Requires lived experience with SUD or mental health disorder.
• Willingness to self-disclose and pursue certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist within one year of hire.
• One year experience in the mental health field preferred.

Responsibilities

• Screen, assess, and link individuals to treatment after hospital discharge.
• Engage patients using lived experience to motivate treatment and recovery.
• Interact at the bedside with motivational interviewing to address barriers.
• Educate on dangers of drugs and alcohol; provide Narcan if needed.
• Identify available treatment via Open Beds and submit referrals promptly.
• Coordinate with ED staff and discharge coordinators for care planning.
• Document daily engagements on required forms and report outcomes.
• Assist clients in setting goals and steps toward recovery.
• Other duties as assigned.
