Job summary

ChristianaCare’s Project Engage seeks a Full-Time Peer Counselor I to support the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department. The role hinges on compassionate peer support for individuals with SUD, linking them to treatment and community resources at discharge.

The counselor will use lived experience to engage patients, document engagements, and guide them toward recovery paths, including Narcan education where needed, under supervision of ED staff and Project Engage coordinators.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Willingness to self-disclose and attend training leading to certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist within one year of hire.
• One year experience working in the mental health field in voluntary or paid position required.

Responsibilities

• Screen and assess individuals with signs of substance use to link to community treatment after discharge.
• Use lived experience to engage patients and support recovery goals.
• Conduct bedside motivational interviewing to address barriers to care.
• Educate patients and families on Narcan safety and provide Narcan where appropriate.
• Submit referrals via open beds and follow up on treatment uptake after discharge.
