Job summary

ChristianaCare's Project Engage is seeking a compassionate Peer Counselor I to support the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department. This full-time position focuses on outreach, screening, linkage to care, and coaching for individuals with substance use disorders.

The role requires lived experience with SUD, involves motivational interviewing at the bedside, education on Narcan, and collaboration with ED staff to ensure timely connections to treatment services after discharge.

Qualifications

• Must have lived experience with a substance use disorder or mental health disorder and be willing to self-disclose as appropriate.
• Must have at least 1 year of experience in the mental health field, voluntary or paid.
• Must be willing to complete certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

• Screen individuals who present to identify signs of substance use and link to community treatment after discharge.
• Engage patients using lived experience to motivate treatment acceptance and linkage to services.
• Conduct bedside motivational interviewing to understand barriers and facilitate appropriate care.
• Educate patients and families on the dangers of drug and alcohol use and Narcan safety; provide Narcan where appropriate.
• Identify available treatment options using open beds platform and submit referrals promptly.
