Job summary

RTX in Tucson, AZ invites a Principal System Safety Engineer to join our DoD-focused safety team onsite. You will develop MIL-STD-882E compliant safety programs, analyze hazards, and guide risk reduction across product lifecycles.

The role requires a STEM degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, plus the ability to coordinate with government customers, perform safety reviews, and mentor junior engineers in a high-stakes defense environment.

Qualifications

• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience.
• Experience developing and implementing MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses
• Experience writing technical reports and presentations
• Experience briefing safety status to safety approval authority at technical reviews, safety review boards or others as part of the safety approval process
• Experience managing or owning a safety program

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs, including management, analysis, evaluation, and verification tasks
• Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards to recommend compliance strategies to program leadership
• Work across all integrated product teams and lines to properly eliminate hazards or provide effective controls
• Create and manage safety strategies, integrate tasks into the Program Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), and ensure compliance with contract and funding requirements
• Oversee safety budgets and execution, including Earned Value Management (EVM) and coordination with CAMs, IPTLs, and product owners
• Provide mentorship to early-career safety engineers
• Coordinate and lead System Safety Working Groups with internal and external stakeholders, including government customers
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to identify and mitigate risks, ensure hazard elimination, and implement effective controls
