Job Summary

Phlebotomist II is responsible for collecting high‑quality blood specimens from patients of all ages, accessioning and processing specimens for laboratory analysis, and maintaining accurate records. The role requires independent venipuncture and skin puncture skills, patient communication, and proficiency with computer and laboratory systems.

Responsibilities
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures on patients from neonates to adults.
  • Obtain, process, and accession blood specimens for analysis.
  • Use computer systems to register patients, facilitate billing, and record specimen data.
  • Ensure accurate specimen identification and resolve discrepancies.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability, record and report problems, and follow reporting procedures.
  • Perform instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to protocols.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage, including in‑home phlebotomy for homebound patients.
  • Complete initial and subsequent competency examinations.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One to two years of related experience (e.g., CNA, MA, medical assistant).
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques and specimen collection guidelines.
  • ASCP Certified Phlebotomy Technician preferred; ASCP certification required for Phlebotomist III.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a comforting attitude toward patients.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Successful completion of competency exams.
